Strasbourg, the capital of French region Alsace, is also called „the Capital of Christmas”, because December in Strasbourg means, above all, the immense Christmas market. This year it’s the 445 edition of this unforgettable event 😉
Christmas market in Strasbourg dates back to the 1570, when under the influence of Protestants, the Christkindelsmärik (market of Child Jesus) replaced old market of Saint Nicolas. The change have been implemented to remind people of the sacrifice God had made for the mankind, giving us his only son to redeem our sins. However, the religious aspect of Christkindelsmärik was forgotten over the centuries. Since this time, Strasbourg has continued the tradition of a authentic, warm and generous Alsatian Christmas. Although I really enjoyed Christmas market in Brussels and Weihnachtsmarkt in Berlin, Strasbourg will remain my number one, when thinking about Christmas markets in Europe. To find out why, scroll down the photos (I mean, enjoy the gallery 😉 ).
